guest-post

Carrie Pulkinen recently wrote a fantastic guest post for Rachel Firasek this week. We love the guest post and we think you will to! Here is an excerpt:

“I love a flawed hero in a romance novel. Too many times, the hero is nothing short of perfect, with his flowing muscles, sparkling eyes, and take-charge attitude. Don’t get me wrong, all those things are sexy. But if the guy is flawless, not only is his character unbelievable, but he doesn’t leave any room for the heroine to grow, change, and take care of herself.

With thanks to Rachel for hosting Carrie!

Excerpt:

She sensed them as they drew closer to her—many different spirits, their energy buzzing on varying frequencies.

“One at a time, guys. Please.” she said. But they didn’t listen. These were the spirits of the mentally ill, after all. Taking turns wasn’t their concern, and they all rushed her. She felt their presence closing in on her like an avalanche, and she was consumed. Every mental illness imaginable was thrown into her psyche as she tightened her grip on Gage’s hand and slumped down in her chair.

“Allison! Allison, are you okay?” Gage’s voice was a distant echo as she fought to hold on to herself. She was slipping. Sliding into the depths of despair and the spirits were pulling her down.

“It’s… No… There’s a light… You need to… You need to go to it.” She tried to help the spirits cross over, but they wouldn’t listen. There were too many. Twenty at least, and they were so consumed by their own illnesses they thought of nothing else. Paranoia, depression, anxiety. Allison felt it all, and it was going to kill her. The pressure. So hard to breath. Her hands cradled her head as the migraine overtook her. Sharp, pounding pain had her crumpled on the floor as she drew her knees into her chest and rocked back and forth.

“Make it stop. Please, just make it stop.” She was paralyzed. Frozen by the anguish of the tortured souls that forced themselves upon her. Hot tears streamed down her face and blood trickled from her nose. She gasped for air as she heard a faint voice call, “Get her out of here!”

About The Author:

Carrie Pulkinen has always been fascinated with the paranormal. Of course, when you grow up next door to a cemetery, the dead (and the undead) are hard to ignore. Pair that with her passion for writing and her father’s insatiable love for monster movies, and you’ve got the perfect recipe for an exciting storyteller.

When she’s not writing stories of amazing sex with devilishly handsome men, Carrie likes to read, take pictures, and play with her kids. She also enjoys hearing from her readers.

If you enjoyed this story, Sweet Release, her first published work is also available from Breathless Press.

Wow! 8 quick, short stories. Most hold your attention, but there were a couple that were really just a flash and left you hanging or wanting more.

Most of the stories involve guys with guys. If that appeals to you this is definitely something you’re going to enjoy! It wasn’t a bad read, I’m just not a fan of really short seemingly unfinished stories.

Death Day Anniversary by Lee Brazil

His squirming movements created unbearable friction, and I traced a hand down the tight denim to capture a taut buttock and hold him still against me while I thoroughly explored the wet cavern he’d granted me access to.

I drew away and stared down at him. “I wanted to do that the first moment I saw you at my resting place.”

Awakening at moonrise to find such a tempting morsel in my tomb had been a delicious surprise. His flight across the graveyard had been invigorating.

“Yeah.” His breathy agreement made me smile again

If you like werewolves and werecats, you will love The Ulfric’s Mate. It’s a great love story of an Ulfric’s finding his mate. She is in another pack. A pack that is run very differently and violently than his. Someone is killing off the pregnant women in Nolen’s Pack. Nolen is sure its Roxy the leader of the other pack nearby. While checking on it he meets Alex and immediately it’s clear they are mates. The twists keep coming. Who is the traitor in Nolen’s pack? Is there more than one? Will Nolen and Alex be able to become mates since she is a healer and needs to remain in her pack? What will happen when Roxy finds out Alex’s secrets? I’m not telling! You will have to get the book and see for yourself.

If you appreciate a good werewolf story with a hint of romance, werecats, lots of twists and turns with a touch of mystery and intrigue, you will love this book. I can’t wait for book two of the War of the Weres.

Excerpt:

“Thanks,” he said, his voice muffled through the shirt. “For the rescue as well,” he added quietly after pulling the shirt she had dug out from behind his dirty truck seat.

“You’re welcome,” she replied as she stepped off the truck’s running board. “Lead me to my room. I’m exhausted and need my beauty rest.” As she came around the front end of the truck, she smiled.

“From where I’m standing, you get plenty of that.”

Her face heated as a blush crept along her cheekbones. “Thanks.” She walked up the front steps to his two-story home. It looked like a phantom rising out of the ground. The windows reflected the mesmerizing moonlight and the glow made her think of stars in the predawn just before the sun rises to take away their backdrop.

He unlocked the door, opened it, and waited for her to precede him. Gentleman? Or the training of law enforcement to never have their backs turned to a criminal? She tried to read his mind, but he held it carefully blank.

“Main living area is upstairs. You keep going right as you get up the stairs, and the bathroom is at the end of the hall. The guest room is the last one on the left. My room’s on the right if you need anything.” Even his voice was neutral.

She looked at him curiously for a moment before heading to the bathroom. When she stepped under the shower’s stream, she sighed in relief. Her skin itched and felt over tight from the dried gunk left on her skin and in her hair after the shape-shifting.

As she relaxed under the spray of warm water, pictures of her in the shower started playing through her head. She was washing her hair and lathering the soap across her breasts when Nolan arrived. Her belly quivered with lust which pooled, then spread as she envisioned him in there with her.

When her daydream reached the point of him entering, she realized it was his thoughts in her head. The fantasy abruptly stopped as if someone had switched the channel. She tried to feel annoyed that his fantasy had intruded on her quiet moment, but the heat in her abdomen kept her from lying to herself.

She wanted him as much as he wanted her. She was aware of his struggle to control his thoughts and appreciated the attempt at valor. However, she knew that a single, healthy man with a woman he found attractive using his shower was bound to have sensual thoughts.

She finished, dressed in the clothes provided by him, and walked out to the main living area. He stood by a large bay window, looking out at the mountain in the distance. He turned toward her slightly, then shifted his gaze back to the picturesque view.

“I’m sorry,” he said quietly and with dignity. “I’ve always judged other men for how they seemed to objectify every woman they see. Then I go and do it with a woman in my protection. I’m aware that you saw what I was thinking. I-”

She put a finger on his lips. “I too have read men’s thoughts regarding women. Regarding me. You tried to keep yours in check. We saved each other’s lives. We’re coming down off the adrenaline high of battle combined with the lust of our animal sides. It’s natural and healthy for you to see me as desirable. It’s also honorable of you to stop them when you realized what you were doing.”

Nolan looked at her intently, and she could feel him in her mind probing her for truth. She thought he didn’t even know he was doing it. It was probably a technique he had employed since childhood. She smiled at him and kissed him softly on the mouth.

Excerpt:

“Witches did and still do exist. You know that wherever there is good there must also be evil to balance it out.” He paused, took a deep breath, then continued. “That can take many forms, witches only being one of them. Not all witches are evil obviously, but Edrith O’Reilly was very evil. When Pria planned to elope with Edrith’s youngest son, she placed a curse on them. She cursed me, and she cursed her own son. I know this is a lot to take in, Nera, but what I have told you is true. That is exactly what happened.”

“Come on, Jasper. You really don’t expect me, us, to believe this, do you?” It couldn’t be true, yet parts of his story were settling into my heart and mind already, as if the words had been waiting to find a resting place within me.

“Yes, girl dear, I do,” Jasper replied, gazing at me. “How did your daughter die, Jasper?” Sully asked, obviously remembering the other dream that I had constantly.

“Edrith slit her throat with a sword, Sully.”

I felt the bile rise in my own throat and pressed my hand to my mouth in an effort to stop it. Breathe, I told myself, just breathe. I squeezed my eyes tight and fought for control. I could feel a hand on my knee, and when I looked up, Jasper was kneeling on the floor in front of me, his gaze full of pain.

“Was that the other dream you were having?” His beautiful blue eyes were shadowed and troubled.

I nodded my head. The words stuck in my mind, the bile forcing its way up my throat. I pushed past him and ran for the downstairs bathroom in the hallway. I leaned over and retched into the bowl. I gripped onto the sides to stop myself from collapsing to the floor. My knees had gone weak, and cold sweat was running down my face. I couldn’t control the shaking and was past caring. Neither my body nor my mind could accept what I had heard. It wasn’t possible. How could it be that Jasper is 800 years old and I am reliving his daughter’s death on a nightly basis? No, it is not possible.

There was a light tap on the door, and Brie tiptoed in with a damp cloth in her hands. Her mouth was set into a grim line. She watched me as I struggled to stand and then handed me the cloth. I leaned against the basin, unsteady on my feet. I wiped my face and hands and looked up at her, my gaze searching her face for any trace of sympathy.

“I’m really going crazy, aren’t I?” I hung my head, suddenly not wanting to see the pity in her eyes.

“I don’t think you are,” she replied, her voice gentle. She ran her hand down my arm before I pulled away. “I think what Jasper is saying is true. Why don’t you come back into the library and we can discuss it more.”

“You’re kidding, right,” I scoffed at her, ignoring the shocked look on her face. “You don’t seriously believe this stuff. Does he look that old to you?” I leaned on the basin until the ground stopped moving under my feet.

“No, he doesn’t.” Brie brushed her hair back from her face and then licked her lips at the reflection in the mirror over my shoulder. “But he said that was part of the curse, Nera. Just listen to him before you decide you’re crazy and he is lying.”

“Whatever.” I threw the cloth into the sink and pushed past her out of the bathroom.

Jasper and Sully looked up when I stalked back into the room. Brie followed me and hurried to sit with Sully on the couch. I opted to stand beside the fireplace, my arms folded.

“I don’t believe you,” I said, knowing that with the hitch in my voice I didn’t sound convincing. I was acting like a petulant bitch, but I couldn’t help it. The way the day was shaping up called for my worst side to come out and play and I really didn’t care.

“Before you make up your mind, there’s more, Nera.” He pursed his lips, then continued. “When there is a curse, there is always a way out of that curse. Each third generation since that time has had one female child that has the ability to break the spell. Not all have had the faith in themselves or believed in me enough to do so. Maybe their connection wasn’t close enough,” he shrugged. “I don’t really know. But you are third generation. You are stronger than any other female that has come forward. Because of who you are, Nera, you are the one.”

Jasper watched me closely while I tried to process the information that he had given me. I nibbled on my bottom lip and pulled at my hair. “What are you trying to tell me?” I asked him.

“When you were born, I knew who you were.” A small smile hovered on his lips. “You were born with a caul, a part of the birthing membrane, on your head, and that makes you a Caulbearer, girl dear. In the world of magic, this marks the child as unique and powerful, usually with psychic gifts, like second sight and the ability to soul journey. But we can talk about that later.”

“Does that mean Nera is a witch?” Brie asked, her eyes wide as she looked at me, her face lighting up.

“I guess that depends on your definition of a witch,” Jasper replied. “I believe there are people in this world who have special abilities. Some call themselves witches, some don’t. It’s just the way you perceive something, I suppose.”

“So what does she have to do with the whole curse thing, then?” Sully asked.

Jasper’s gazed met mine before he answered. “She is the one that can stop the curse and let me die.”

“Are you crazy, Jasper? How can you even think I would let you die?” I jumped to my feet, the horror of what he was saying slamming into me. I paused for a breath, the fear gripping my chest like a vice which made such a simple task difficult. It was too much for me. I turned and fled to the kitchen and threw open the door to the garden. I gulped down a breath of cool air and lurched over to a grassy patch and sank to the ground. Hugo walked over to me and licked my hand before sitting down in front of me, his soulful brown gaze on my face.

“Oh, Hugo, what is going on?” I cried, pushing my face into his fur. Cradling his head in my arms for comfort, I leaned against his huge body. I felt movement, and Brie and Sully sat down beside me. They reached out and wrapped their arms around me. Most of what Jasper had told us was hard to believe, but what if it was true? Parts of my brain screamed at me that it was possible, but parts still balked at the idea of witches, gods, and demons—especially so close to someone I loved.

“Do you believe what Jasper said?” Sully leaned forward. He picked a blade of grass and ran it through his fingers before looking at me again.”Do you think it could be possible?”

“I really don’t know.” I sighed, rubbing the back of my hand over my face. “It seems so farfetched.”

“But it could be true.” Brie leaned her chin on my shoulder. “What if you really are what he says you are? I’ve always said there was something special about you. Everyone thinks so, not just Sully and me.”

“Yeah, Connor thinks I’m special, so special he wants to grope me every time he sees me,” I scoffed.

“Stop being so pigheaded. You know you have something that no one else has. Do you really think we would hang out with you if you were normal?” Brie joked. Her smile faded quickly when I looked at her, and she pulled away from me.

“I know you are trying to make me feel better, and I do appreciate it, I really do. But if this is even halfway true… It’s so much to take in.” Just pull yourself together, girl. This is getting you nowhere, tears over, deal with it.

Friends With Benefits at Breathless Press

Carrie Pulkinen was interviewed by the fantastic Emily at Sharing Links And Wisdom this week. We love the interview and we think you will to! Here is an excerpt:

Open your book to a random page and tell us the first paragraph…

Logan held her. The faceless woman that he loved was locked in his embrace as the other woman cried out to him. She wore a long, white gown, and blood dripped down her featureless face. He was resolved, feeling nothing for the woman in white as her desperation drove her to the window ledge.”

She also enjoys hearing from her readers, who can write to her at carrie.pulkinen@hotmail.com.

If you enjoyed this story, Sweet Release, her first published work is also available from Breathless Press.

“Dammit, Tony, this is not funny!”

The forest waited, unnaturally quiet. Dan took a step deeper into the trees and his scalp prickled. Fear shivered through him. He was going to fucking kill Tony for this.

He jumped as a shadow moved in the trees. “Tony?”

Heart thumping, he rounded a Cedar and saw Tony crumpled on the ground. Oh shit. He knelt and gathered the man in his arms. His skin felt like ice. “Honey?”

Dan lifted his head. A dark presence stood at his back, malevolent, treacherous. He whimpered at the foul breath on his neck. “What…”

A hand, black as midnight and despair, appeared. A light shown through clasped fingers. The thing’s whisper was sharp as a blade. “His life. Trade?”

He nodded, and quicksilver slid from the dark hand into Tony’s breast. Then arms went around him, tight as a vice, and hauled him to his feet.

“Dan!”

He looked back. Tony stared at them, terror on his face.

“Wait—” Dan began, but the black thing clutched his cock through his jeans. Pleasure exploded in his body, boiled along his nerves. Too much! His orgasm built on a wave of exquisite pain and ecstasy, searing his blood. He opened his mouth to scream but lush lips clamped on his, over ripe, rotten, stealing his breath. Then darkness took him for its own.

Meet the Character’ Spotlight

Author: Dianne Hartsock

Title of Book:

Freaky Flashes: The Birthday, Andrew Calls the Dead, In the Shadows

Characters Cyros, Steve and Nick

Is this the hero/heroine/villain/secondary character? These are my villians

Please give a warm welcome to  Cyrus, Andrew and Nick from Freaky Flashes by Dianne Hartsock today as we sit down and see what makes them tick.

Q: So tell us about yourself. What got you in the crosshairs for your author?

Cyrus: She might have seen me at one of the dance clubs. *smooths shirt over chest* I’m pretty hard to miss.

Andrew: I think she’s friends with that back-stabbing Steve.

Nick: I’ve been in all the newspapers lately.

Q: What was it that drew you to your mate?

Cyrus: *tender smile* Kyle was a jewel in the darkness.

Andrew: Casey’s blue eyes, adorable mouth, sexy as hell body, but it’s his dry humor I love the most.

Nick: *licks lips* Bobbie’s delicious, but so are so many others…

Q: A little naughty fun, where was the wildest place you seduced your partner(s)?

Cyrus: In the back alley behind the dance club. He was so precious I had to take him home.

Andrew: In a secluded booth at The Tea Room off 5th Street. We might have gotten a little loud.

Nick: Oh, I tickled Bobbie’s fancy behind the fountain in Upper City Park

Q: Boxers, briefs or Commando on a man?

Cyrus: commando

Andrew: briefs

Nick: I never notice what they’re wearing.

Q: If your partner wants to seduce you, what’s one sure fire trick he/she can play?

Cyrus: Tears in Kyle’s eyes break through my defenses every time.

Andrew: Casey has this certain grin that really gets me going.

Nick: Bobbie has a certain cologne he uses.

Q: What is the one place on your partner’s body that you know will drive them wild-in and out of bed?

Cyrus: A kiss on Kyle’s tender neck.

Andrew: If I rub the small of Casey’s back.

Nick: It’s earlobes, on Bobbie.

Q: What was one of the most embarrassing things your author did to you in Freaky Flashes?

Cyrus: Had me caught with my pants down, as it were.

Andrew: Made me talk to that ass Steve.

Nick: Turn the tables on me! If I ever catch up with her…

Q: Anything else you would like to add?

Cyrus: *eyes Andrew* You know, you’re kind of cute.

Nick: *moistens his lips* He is, isn’t he. What do you say me and you take him outside…

Andrew: Oh…shit
